The Beginning

• A batik workshop for women was the beginning of artistic growth at Utopia.
• The batik workshops in 1977 progressed to exquisite silk paintings by 1988
• The batik painters decided to try painting canvas in 1989 and began producing strikingly beautiful works

• Utopia style is vibrant colors with unique and contemporary designs
• The top banner of this page is a piece from Utopia painted by Minnie Pwerle
• The most famous exponent of Utopia style was Emily Kame Kngwarreye who died in 1996
